Portfolio Page 1: Initial Letter
Starting my Freshman year at RHS has definitely been a huge change for me. I went from attending a small, one class, country school to a large campus, seven period day, high school. With last year being partially online, it was especially hard to know what to expect. But now that I'm finally here things don't seem as bad as I thought. Even with all the uncertainty that Covid-19 brought to the school year, I'm still so grateful to be back. Not having that in-person connection with my teachers and peers really affected how I learned and bonded with my classmates. It was hard trying to stay motivated and keep positive when everything seemed so optional. Even with how large of a toll it had on me, without it I would be a completely different person. I had to start relying on myself to be my own motivation and to keep up a strong work ethic. In the end, it really taught me to be grateful for all the experiences and opportunities that are open to me. High school is such a memorable time in life, whether I'm sitting at a desk or sitting in my bed in front of a computer screen, I want to make the most of it. I'm super excited for all the aspects of Freshman year, from attending school events, to being active in my classes. As for leadership, I can't wait to learn more skills in professionalism and become more of an outgoing person. It feels like there's so much room to grow with it being only my first year and I can't wait to see how I change. That's one of the reasons I chose new moon as my theme for freshman year. I think this is the year to start fresh and try to find what I'd like to become. I wish to be a better person for myself and those around me, and to continue following the goals I've set for the next four years here.

"It hurt because it mattered." - John Green
I really love this quote because it acts as a reminder that not all problems need to be big to leave an impact on you. I find myself getting upset over little things and not being able to place the reason why. In life a lot of the time, we try to convince ourselves that some things don't matter. That it's easier to just play it off like it didn't affect us. But usually those are the problems that hurt us most, the ones we don't want to deal with or face.

"The most important decision you make is to be in a good mood." - Voltaire
I've had to learn this the hard way, but this quote has a lot of truth. I used to not really think about my mindset and my attitude about things. The way I felt was the way I felt, I didn't think I could change that. But after the start of high school I've started to have a better outlook on the things I do. I started getting up earlier, greeting everyone with a smile, and trying to be a more positive version of myself. I didn't realize how much I actually started to change. I begun to be happier with my life and it helped me to be a better student, a better friend, and ultimately, a better person. Simply being more optimistic about my view of life changed the way I am on the inside and out.

"We accept the love we think we deserve." - Stephen Chbosky
Ever since I heard this quote it's really stuck with me. Often, before we learn to love ourselves, we give our love and support to other people. We get so wrapped up in the lives of others and making sure they're okay before giving time to ourselves. It's really important to learn how to love and care for yourself. You can't give someone your genuine love unless you first learn your own value. 4

"Don't find a fault, find a remedy." - Henry Ford
I find a lot of value in this quote after reflecting on my growth as a leader in the past year. There has been a lot of struggles, but with that came experiences to learn. Often in the beginning, when an event or activity didn't go according to plan, I found myself trying to find where it went wrong right away. Now I can realize that it's more important to find a solution and way to rectify the situation than to spend time dwelling on what you should have done. This also helps focus on the importance of evaluation. When an important event is planned or task is done reflecting on how it ran is crucial. This helps to find why and how the things that went well worked, but also what went wrong and how it can be prevented in the future.

Portfolio Page 4: Goals
1. Two leadership goals I have for this year are to have a successful Homecoming and to continue to work hard in all the events we plan. Homecoming is a really exciting part of the year and it's my first time experiencing it and actually being in high school so I want it to be memorable. Not only for myself, but for everyone. With this being my first year in leadership I want the events I take part in and plan to be fun and thought through.
2. Two short term goals that I have for myself are to get a job and to get back into writing. For my job I think it would be really cool to get hired and Barnes and Noble. I love books and it seems like a fun job to have since it involves something I'm interested in. I also want to get back into writing in my free time because if I want to go into journalism as my career path it's good to keep up practice.
3. Two long term goals I have for myself are to get into a good, four-year college and travel for my job, I think a good education is important and I love learning so getting into a college is something I really hope I'm able to achieve. As well as the experience I want to be able to major in something I take interest in and use it for my career field. I also want to travel with being a journalist. I really love travel and being able to do that with my career would be a dream. I want to go all around the world and be able to have really cool experience I can remember for a lifetime.

Portfolio Page 5: Goals-Reflection
1. I successfully achieved both of the leadership goals I set for myself! Along with the help of the rest of the freshman representatives, we were able to have a really great first homecoming. It was a special experience to share with others and taught me a lot about working with a team and adaptation. As for my personal work ethic, I believe I've done well at keeping a strong focus and determination. Throughout points where I felt confused or unmotivated I pushed through and remembered that everything I'm putting my heart into has purpose and meaning. I can confidently say I've done my best and put all my effort into this program.
2. I'm still working on the two short term goals I set. As for the job, I'm still very interested in beginning to work but I just haven't actively pursued it yet. Barnes and Noble continues to be at the top of my list but I've thought about other options and want to get started. I haven't been super involved with free writing recently because I've had other priorities, but I try to incorporate it into my life as much as I can. When I do writing assignments for classes I try to have some fun with it and work on my structure.
3. I've briefly worked on my long term goals and taking them a step further. I'm still planning on attending a four-year college and am really interesting in visiting some campuses and looking into schools or areas I like. I don't have my heart set on anything at the moment and don't have a long plan, which can be both scary and comforting. With this, I do know that I still want to go into journalism. Since I'll be doing my mock interview with a journalist I'll get more of an inside perspective of the job and its details.

Portfolio Page 8: Role Model
I'm lucky to have many role models in my life who inspire me and push me to work harder, but one in particular is my best friend Kennedy. Our friendship started in 2016, the fourth grade. From the day we met we instantly clicked. We bonded throughout our elementary school years and made so many amazing memories. And now being in high school, we're as close as we've ever been. I truly admire her work ethic and determination. She maintains great grades while being committed to playing water polo and I have no idea how she does it all. Even while she's handling all of her sports and academic activities she makes time for me. She's one of the people I trust the most and never once have I felt like I couldn't confide in her when I have troubles. Kennedy always encourages me to be more confident in myself and accepts me for who I am. I'm grateful for all the advice she's given me and how she helps me to be a better person every day. |
Portfolio Page 9: Inner Animal
For my inner animal this year I chose a hummingbird. At first I was a little clueless when it came to choosing my animal. I asked some of my peers and I got multiple responses saying I would be some type of bird. Initially, I didn't understand why. But the more I thought about it the more I resonated with birds, especially the hummingbird. They can symbolize healing and good luck, and bring positive energy and joy. The characteristics of a hummingbird relate to a lot of my goals when it comes to mindset and mental health. I think having a positive attitude is best for not only yourself, but those around you as well. I strive to be a contributor to a healthier environment. Like a hummingbird, I can also be a bit timid sometimes. I want to work on being more comfortable and confident around people. Hummingbirds show joy and luck and I want to do the same. I'd love to encourage people to be the best version of themselves and promote happiness! |
Portfolio Page 10: The Best Things About Me
I believe some of the best things about me are the people I surround myself with. I'm so thankful every day for my incredible support system of friends and family who never fail to make me feel like I can pursue anything I dream of. My family, for constantly making sure I constantly know how loved I am and that I will always make them proud no matter what. And my friends, who I cannot give enough thanks to. Whether it's friends I've known since kindergarten, or friends I just met this past year, I can always count on them to be there for me and be my #1 cheerleaders in all that I accomplish. Without them, I never would've done the things I'm most happy to have completed. That being taking part in sports, getting into the leadership program, or speaking at my eighth grade graduation. The people I keep close to me in my life mean more to me than they will ever know, and I will never stop being there for them like they've been there for me time and time again.

-gone, gone, gone, by phillip phillips When life leaves you high and dry I'll be at your door tonight If you need help, if you need help I'll shut down the city lights I'll lie, cheat, I'll beg and bribe To make you well, to make you well When enemies are at your door I'll carry you away from war If you need help, if you need help Your hope dangling by a string I'll share in your suffering To make you well, to make you well Give me reasons to believe That you would do the same for me And I would do it for you, for you Baby, I'm not moving on I'll love you long after you're gone For you, for you You will never sleep alone I'll love you long after you're gone And long after you're gone, gone, gone When you fall like a statue I'm gon' be there to catch you Put you on your feet, you on your feet And if your well is empty Not a thing will prevent me Tell me what you need What do you need? I surrender honestly You've always done the same for me So, I would do it for you, for you Baby, I'm not movin' on I'll love you long after you're gone For you, for you You will never sleep alone I'll love you long after you're gone And long after you're gone, gone, gone You're my backbone You're my cornerstone You're my crutch when my legs stop moving You're my head start You're my rugged heart You're the pulse that I've always needed Like a drum, baby, don't stop beating Like a drum, my heart never stops beating For you, for you Baby, I'm not moving on I'll love you long after you're gone For you, for you You will never sleep alone I'll love you long after you're gone For you, for you Baby, I'm not movin' on I'll love you long after you're gone For you, for you You will never sleep alone I'll love you long, long after you're gone Like a drum, baby, don't stop beating Like a drum, my heart never stops beating for you And long after you're gone, gone, gone I'll love you long after you're gone, gone, gone |
The song I chose to represent me was Gone, gone, gone, by Phillip Phillips. In this song, the artist describes all the different ways he would help the person he loves. The reason I chose this song is because I can relate to the way the artist will go to extreme lengths to protect those he's closest to. The relationships I have mean so much to me and I will always be there for the people I care about when they need me. They've helped me through difficult times in my life and I want them to know that they'll never be alone as long as I'm with them. It's important to show your love for people in multiple ways, you can never just assume that someone knows you love them. To really care is to do acts of service for them, big or small it doesn't matter, as long as they can see the thought and effort given. I get so much joy out of uplifting and supporting my friends and family after all they've done for me. This song really shows that deep love I have for the connections I've made with people.

Portfolio Page 14: What I Like Best About Being A Member Of Leadership
Being a part of the leadership program truly means a lot to me. I've made so many friendships and connections with people I never thought I would before. The lessons that I've been taught this year will stick with me for years to come, as well as the memories. My first favorite memory from leadership was decorating for Homecoming week with the freshman. We were rather unorganized and had a lot of mishaps in the process of putting our items for competition together. As stressful as the experience was, it made for a pretty fun time. The freshman group spent a lot of time together that week and we got to know a lot about each other. In the moment it was quite hectic, but looking back on it I wouldn't have had it any other way. My second favorite memory from leadership getting added to the Balloon Arch Committee. I remember being really excited to have this experience because I looked up to all the girls a part of it. I look forward to every time we have an event that requires us to make a balloon arch because it means I get to spend time with them. I've been really lucky to grow a friendship with the girls and take some of their advice as I move on in high school. My third favorite leadership memory was going to lunch with a couple of the freshman and upperclassmen. It was after decorating for Christmas and most of us hadn't even eaten that day so a few of them invited us to come with them to Denny's. It was just fun to be able to get to know them better and bond with them. Leadership has given me so much to be happy about and so many fun times to look back on. I hope to continue making them and have more fun with all those involved.

Portfolio Page 15: Reflection Of A Peer In Leadership
The peer I decided to do a reflection on is Abby Campos. We met at Core Camp in 2021 and really bonded there. I was afraid of meeting new people but she took me under her wing and taught me the ropes. She's been so comforting to me and has become a person that I trust a lot. I value her advice and perspective on things, as well as her humor. My favorite memory of us is the first time we hung out together. A couple days before school started we got coffee and talked for nearly four hours about everything. We bonded over past experiences and she relieved a lot of my worries about freshman year, as she was going into her junior year. I remember feeling so happy that I had an upperclassmen I felt comfortable with, and who enjoyed being with me as much as I enjoyed being with her. I've always felt very lucky for her, without Abby the start of the year would've been much more scary and I wouldn't have had that newfound confidence. I admire her hard work and optimistic attitude, and can't thank her enough for the helping hand she reached out for me to grab. |

|
I love to indulge in my hobbies and spend time further exploring them. For me, my hobbies are how I express myself and they allow me to relax. One of those being reading. It helps me discover my interests and there's a lot of freedom in what you choose. The different genres and authors inspire me in all parts of my life. One of those parts, being art. Art takes so many different forms and they all intrigue me. I would like to have a career in the subject in my future. The art that is created can say so much about an artist's individuality or the cause they made it for. The last hobby I love is traveling. Experiencing different cultures, ways of life, and places is really eye opening to me. Living in such a small town, traveling allows me to see the world outside of where I've lived my whole life. My hobbies give me perspective and ways to feel happy.

Portfolio Page 19: Letter to Parents
Throughout all of my life, I’m lucky to say that I’ve always had the support and unconditional love of my parents. No matter what, they’ve been there for me time and time again, ready to provide me with what I need to be the best version of myself. I highly value my relationship with both my mom and dad, and all the different ways they’ve helped me. My mom is my best friend. As I grow up, I find myself becoming more and more like her. She inspires me with her compassion, vigilance, and incredibly kind heart. The way she carries herself with such determination and assurance makes me proud to be her daughter. She teaches me to be confident in myself and shows how she cares about me on a daily basis. I can talk to her about anything and I find comfort in knowing she’ll be there for me through anything I may go through.
My dad has been my smile on a bad day. He helps me and is there to give me advice when I need it most. I spent a lot of time with him growing up and have specific memories that I wouldn’t change for the world. He’s taught me about perseverance and never letting anything stop you from your goals. He knows what I need and always does his best to do that for me.
They both have shown me all the different ways love is represented in a relationship. They’ve been the picture of the morals and values I want to keep going forward. From my mom, I have a best friend, a role model who keeps her head high and never lets me down. And from my dad, the light to my dark day and the reminder to keep going. Together, they make me happy to be who I am and excited for my future.
To the both of you, thank you for never letting me doubt myself and making sure I constantly know how loved I am. It’s a privilege to have such amazing parents and to get to learn from people who I admire. I continue to try to make you as proud of me, as I’m as proud of you. Thank you for giving me the freedom and acceptance to be whoever I want to be and let me lead my own path. I wake up everyday to a life of opportunity because of the both of you, and for that I cannot possibly thank you enough.
Love, Claire

Portfolio Page 24: The Professional
Being in leadership this year opened up so many opportunities for me to learn more about professionalism and I value every lesson. One topic we cover that I find really important is mock interviews. We all choose a career we want to go into and then find someone who works in that to give us an interview as if we're applying for the job. Without leadership, I would never have the chance to be interviewed by somebody with my dream profession. It's great practice for the future and helps me to feel more prepared for when I do have to go into an interview. Another thing that I'm glad we cover in this class is task managing. Leadership helps with how to organize events and make sure preparations are in order for large activities. From procedure forms to weekly journals, I feel more comfort in having all my tasks written out. We're taught many different tactics to making sure that communication is being valued and that preparations are being carried out correctly. Aside from the social aspect, I really enjoy how the class prepares the students for the future. I find a lot of comfort knowing that I've practiced professionalism and can confidently say i've learned a lot about it compared to the beginning of the year.

Portfolio Page 25: Change
Change can be a scary concept, it means that the things you're used to and comfortable with are altered in ways that aren't familiar. I think that's how I viewed change for a large part of my life, instead of welcoming it I tried to stay within my comfort zone. In reality, change can be a beautiful thing that makes living more exciting and teaches us to adapt. At the beginning of this year in leadership I was so worried about meeting other people's standards. My main goals were to make sure that those around me were satisfied and that I wasn't doing anything to upset anyone. Now, because of change, I realize how that perspective was self destructive. I held the right intentions, wanting to be considerate and thoughtful of others. But the wrong part was putting everyone above myself, and immediately thinking I was inferior to my peers. Having that mindset led me to a burnout, I was overwhelmed and stressed from never giving myself a break. I was so caught up in the idea that I wasn't living up to other people's expectations of me or meeting the standards I should've been. What I've learned now, is that giving yourself credit for what you can do and having personal limits is so important when it comes to mental health and how you interact with others. Without confidence, I let people walk all over me and felt guilty for taking a lead. And not having any limits meant I accepted more work than I could handle, then felt weak when I couldn't balance it. To be honest, I still have to work on being more assured and believing in myself, but that's the great thing about change. It doesn't have to happen right away, change can be gradual. Although I may not be finished with improving my perspective, I know that I deserve to have confidence and strength in myself.
Portfolio Page 26: The Ideal Leader
Passion is something that is very important to not only me personally, but to what I look for in a leader. I think that a truly amazing leader is passionate about the things they do and constantly strive for progress. A leader is a role model, someone that people admire and look up to for many different reasons. Knowing this, I think that whoever is in that highly influential role should display interest, love, and dedication. Along with this, a good leader is also transparent. It's a very hard thing to be vulnerable, but once someone is comfortable displaying vulnerability they're able to connect with peers more. It shows genuine care and spreads the message that people in power don't always have to be perfect. A leader who isn't happy with the work they do will only result in a group of people who aren't passionate about what they do. A great leader starts with curiosity and enthusiasm, only then can everyone involved flourish as a team.
